With the decision of the United States Supreme Court to annul the ruling Roe vs. Wade, a 10 year old girl, who was a victim of child abuse, had to move to Indiana in search of an abortion, after in her native Ohio this practice was prohibited.
The Columbus Dispatch reported that a child abuse doctor in Ohio requested the support of Dr. Caitlin Bernard, an obstetrician and gynecologist from Indianapolis, to perform the procedure.
Because the minor is six weeks and three days pregnant, she was ineligible for only three days to perform an abortion in Ohio.
On Friday, a judge rejected a petition by abortion advocates in the state, which sought to stop the abortion ban of six weeks in the state.
Fox 59 reported that as of Friday, Indiana’s only abortion restriction is a law that requires clinics ask women if their abortion is coerced, which is illegal.
The law came into effect on 1 July and more restrictions may be passed in the state after the Indiana General Assembly hearing on July 25.
The Columbus Dispatch notes that abortion providers in Indiana say they have felt the impact of the Roe vs. Wade overturn and say they have seen an increase in patients coming from other states to receive the procedure.
After the annulment of the right to abortion in 1973, advocates have mobilized to state courts to stop restrictions on abortions that are expected to go into effect in 22 states.
While clinics of abortion in Ohio, Idaho, West Virginia and Mississippi have made an effort to temporarily stop the bans implemented by the state.
