The Dominican Republic team surprised Guatemala this Friday by defeating it in the semifinal match of the sub-qualifiers 20 of Concacaf in the penalty shootout, after finishing the match tied at two goals.
In the penalties, the Dominicans prevailed 4-2, with which in addition to sealing their pass to the final of the qualifying tournament for the World Cup, they scored in the Olympic Games in Paris 2024, in a historic event for his country, which in football had never qualified for a World Cup or Olympics.
Guatemala took the lead at the minute 23 through Arquímides Ordóñez, and to 29 Sebastián Mañón made it 2-0, to close the first half with partial victory.
In the second half, the Dominican Republic opted to rescue the game, which they took care of, in two minutes, Guillermo De Peña (64) and Edison Azcona (64), which caused the lengthening of 30 minutes.
The Guatemalans, who had just eliminated Mexico in the quarterfinals, will now seek at least third place in the World Cup with the rival that comes out of the game between the United States and Honduras, which will also be played this Friday.
