The time has passed for a person to put up with anything in a company, for fear of losing their job. At least for millennials and generation Z. Today, young people want challenges, to feel that we are contributing to a cause that is bigger and more significant than ourselves.
In my analysis I found two main reasons why someone is not happy at work:
- 1. You do not feel valued in your company
- 2. His role has become monotonous and he sees no chance of further growth
Knowing this, how can we create a culture where young people feel happy and motivated in your work?
The first thing is to have a clear vision and share it enthusiastically. In such a way that absolutely every person in the organization knows why we do what we do and where we are going in the coming years. It is illogical to ask someone to get excited about the future of the company, if we do not know what it is. It is also illogical to ask someone to make the mission of the company part of their life, if they are not clear about where they can grow. Clarity is power.
The second thing is that leaders know their teams. Take the time to connect with the people who work every day and help you achieve your goals. Having a team that does its job because it is passionate about it and not because it has to, is what allows a company to innovate and grow exponentially.
The last thing I would recommend is listening and making compromises. What does my team need to feel good and give their best? What would be the ideal culture for them to be happy? And if it’s within your reach, do it.
Millennials have a negative connotation of employment, because they have probably seen family members working in companies, where they have to go to an office every day to do the same thing for 40 years. And if they don’t do what the boss says, they get fired.
This kind of corporate culture is not going to work today. You, as a leader, must listen to your team, give them the freedom to undertake new ideas within the company and show them that you value them. At the end of the day, people don’t care how much you know until they know how much they care about you.
If you create a vision big enough, where the team feels they can achieve their goals, it shows how much you value him and also do everything possible so that he is good at his job. Without a doubt, this is how you will have a team committed to your company and your long-term vision.
