Uvalde School District Police Chief Pete Arredondo resigned from his separate position on the Uvalde City Council following the massacre at Robb Private School last 24 May, after accusations against him for the response to the incident, he specified a letter of resignation sent by the official to the city.
“After much consideration , the best thing for the community is to resign as a member of the District 3 City Council to minimize distractions,” Arredondo said in a letter. “The mayor, city council and city staff must continue to move forward to unite our community once again.”
Officials from the city of Uvalde, where the fatal shooting occurred where they died 21 people, confirmed having received a letter of resignation this Saturday from Arredondo.
Arredondo’s response, as police chief of the Uvalde School District, was the subject of controversy after complaints of alleged late response to the shooting in which 19 students died, as well as two teachers. Arredondo’s role in the events has been under intense public scrutiny and criticism from the Texas Department of Homeland Security.
Criticism has deepened because more than an hour passed before officers entered the classrooms where Salvador Ramos, aged 19, had dozens of students held, where he was shot after responding to the incident .
Last week, Arredondo was suspended from his duties as police chief of the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District after his accusations.
The city of Uvalde issued a press release this Saturday in which he stated that Arredondo’s resignation from the city council “is the right thing to do,” the Leader News stated before Arredondo’s resignation letter was officially received.
Arredondo was elected to the Municipal Council of Uvalde on May 7, days before the massacre. However, after the incident, he was sworn in for the position of councilman.
In a letter, Arredondo stated that “while we continue to mourn the tragedy that occurred on 24 May we pray for the affected families and our entire community”.
“Uvalde has a rich history of arming and supporting its neighbor, and we must continue to do so. Talking to other communities that have had similar tragedies, the guidance has been the same: continue to support families. Continue to support our community, and above all, let’s stand firm in our faith”, said Arredondo.
“As I look back on my life, from growing up as a child to adulthood, Uvalde has had an attraction that is incredibly unique. At the center of that attraction are the members of our community. Together we will keep Uvalde strong”, Arredondo added.
