The perpetrator of the shooting in Highland Park (Illinois, USA) used a rifle, he was a white man among some 000 and 20 years old and is still on the run, the Police reported at a press conference.
Commander Chris O’Neil asked the neighbors to seek shelter because it is considered that the author of the shooting could be “armed and dangerous”.
“The suspect has been described as a white male approximately between 18 and 20 years old with long black hair, small build and wearing a white or blue t-shirt”, described O’Neil, who asked for citizen collaboration to find him.
Several witnesses had informed local media that the young man was shooting from a roof, something that the security forces are trying to determine, explained O’Neil.
At least 6 people have died and two dozen are seriously injured as result of the shooting that occurred shortly after a US Independence Day parade began.
Security forces have recovered a firearm used by the suspect, explained the police.
The shooting caused dozens of people to start running scared by the sound of gunshots, videos from the Chicago show Sun Times.
Several authorities had attended the parade, including the governor of Illinois, Democrat Jay Robert “JB” Pritzker, and Democratic legislator Brad Schnider.
Highland Park is a residential area located about 40 kilometers from Chicago where some 24,000 people, according to the census of 2020.
