Kamala Harris, Vice President of the United States, had a telephone conversation with the doctor who performed an abortion on a year-old girl who became pregnant after of being raped, to express her gratitude.
CBS News contacted Dr. Caitlin Bernard, to find out more details of the talk she held last 19 July with Harris
“She really just thanked me. He thanked me for speaking, for bringing up this subject,” Bernard told the television network.
“He talked about how important it is to listen to the voices of doctors and, again, what has become a political situation, but in reality it is about health care and how important which is that doctors advocate for their patients”, he added.
It was June 30 when Bernard performed the abortion on the minor, Less than a week after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, who made it illegal for the girl to have an abortion in Ohio, her home state.
Harris’s call to the doctor was confirmed by a White House representative, who explained that the vice president thanked Bernard for his “courage, professionalism and dedication to his patients” and said his actions gave a “sense of strength” to others.
The case of the 10 year old girl who became pregnant after being raped caused a lot of controversy and was used as an example of the problems with the prohibitions of the abortion in Republican states, it was even taken up by President Joe Biden.
Meanwhile, Dr. Caitlin Bernard is suing Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita, who said he defamed her when he called her “abortion activist”.
Rokita cast doubt on whether the rape and abortion occurred and announced that he was opening an investigation into whether Bernard denounced the procedure.
Although several questioned the story, everything became clear when it was revealed that the rape had occurred and that a man of Ohio of 27 years was accused of having raped the minor.
The Columbus Dispatch was the first to reveal the miscarriage of the minor, saying that she crossed state lines to access the procedure.
The girl was six weeks and three days pregnant, making her ineligible for only three days to receive the procedure in Ohio.
