sprite-will-remove-its-green-bottles-and-logo-from-august

Coca Cola announced that it is taking important steps to support a circular economy for plastic packaging, and that it is launching bottles made of PET plastic 100% recycled (excluding caps and labels), so Sprite will change its traditional green plastic bottle to clear plastic, to increase the likelihood that the material will be transformed into new beverage bottles.

Sprite will change all PET plastic containers from their characteristic green color to transparent starting August 1st. Although green PET is recyclable, the recycled material is more often converted into single-use items, such as clothing and carpets, that cannot be recycled into new PET bottles.

The green plastic wallet of Coca-Cola North America, including containers for Fresca, Seagram’s and Mello Yello, will transition to clear PET in the coming months.

The soft drink company explained that during the classification process, the green and other colored PET is separated from the transparent material to avoid discoloration of the recycled containers suitable for food use.

“Removing the colors from the bottles improves the quality of the recycled material,” said Julian Ochoa, executive director of R3CYCLE, which is working with Coca-Cola Consolidated to enable bottle recycling. in the US “This transition will help increase the di availability of food grade rPET. When recycled, clear PET Sprite bottles can be turned into bottles, helping drive a circular economy for plastic.”

Vallette explained that Sprite’s decision will help introduce more bottles 88% rPET like the ones DASANI is launching and to maintain more bottles in the circular economy“.

In addition to the transition to transparent bottles, Sprite will be presenting a new image with a renewed logo and a new packaging design.

Sprite packaging graphics will retain the brand’s recognizable green hue and include a prominent “Recycle Me” message .

According to a company statement, Coca-Cola North America’s entire green plastic portfolio, including containers for Fresca, Seagram’s and Mello Yello, will switch to using clear PET in the coming months.
