Venessa Diagne got the shock of her life when she was walking home and the ground beneath her feet opened up, partially falling down a manhole in New Jersey.
The victim screamed for help and luckily her neighbors in East Orange heard her and ran to rescue her.
Diagne used every ounce of her strength to avoid falling completely down the hole. She suffered numerous bumps and bruises on her legs from fighting not to be absorbed.
The manhole cover he fell through rises when it rains and becomes a hazard to anyone walking on the sidewalk. Crews have been working on the problem, but a look underground showed muddy, stagnant water that wasn’t draining properly, ABC News said.
“My whole right side was there and the plate was under me getting ready to slide under me, so I was screaming and not moving because I didn’t want the plate to move and I didn’t want to fall” . Diagne recalled.
The city is investigating and addressing the problem, which came close to becoming a tragedy. “I’ve seen the water rise, but I’ve seen (the culvert) open and close over the last three years,” Diagne said. And he added that two other neighbors have fallen down that sewer.
In a similar case, in January 2021 an old man was rescued after falling 10 feet (3 meters) down a storm drain on Long Island (NY).
