kateryna-monzul's-story:-from-escaping-the-war-in-ukraine-to-whistling-for-the-women's-euro-cup-final

Football gives us more and more inspiring stories that are worth narrating, such as that of referee Kateryna Monzul, who went from living the worst moments of her life in the Russian military invasion of Ukraine, to whistling the Great Final of the Women’s Euro Cup.

Monzul had to leave his country after suffering first-hand the ravages of the bloody war, without knowing that life had a great future in store for him.

Thousands of spectators applauded the Ukrainian for her excellent work in the Final between Germany and England at Wembley Stadium.

Without a doubt, going from hearing gunshots and explosions to being applauded by thousands of fans represented a great experience for the whistler, and she said so in an interview with UEFA

“It was impossible to stay there, everything was destroyed. This is a very emotional moment for me. We heard gunshots and bombs. We ran underground and sat there waiting for them to stop, but they didn’t stop. You can not believe what we live. It was dangerous and terrible”, indicated the referee in the interview held at the beginning of March.

Monzul has extensive experience in international football, and is currently considered one of the best referees in the world. In fact, she is the first Ukrainian to officiate a Women’s Euro Cup Final.

Kateryna had to escape from the city of Kharkov and take refuge in Italy, after passing through Moldova, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Germany, to be able to safeguard her life, and to be able to continue doing what she is passionate about.

In the Final of the European Championship, she was accompanied by the assistants Paulina Baranowska and Maryna Striletska, the latter Ukrainian as well.

The Estonian Karolin Kaivoja was in the reserve and the Tialiano Maurizio as VAR assistants Mariani and the Dutchman Pol Van Boekel.

The Final of the Women’s European Championship was won by England with a score of 2-1 over Germany.
