beyonce-will-re-record-a-musical-theme-that-was-offensive-to-the-disability-community

Just a week after presenting her new record production called “Renaissance”, Beyoncé decided that she will return to the studio to re-record one of her songs that was involved in a controversy.

And it is that in the song Heated, which was co-written with Canadian rapper Drake, among others, the word “spaz” is used, considered a derogatory reference to the medical term spastic diplegia, a form of cerebral palsy.

Hence, emulating Melissa Viviane Jefferson —better known by her stage name Lizzo—, Beyoncé will choose to eliminate the controversial word from the lyrics of her song and that means going back to the recording studio.

“The word, not intentionally used in a harmful way, will be replaced” , wrote a spokesperson for Beyoncé through a statement released by The Associated Press.

Controversial use of language

It should be remembered that last month , Lizzo also removed the word from one of her songs, Grrrls, all in response to claims from various advocates for people with disabilities who complained about the lyrics.

In this regard, Hannah Diviney , disability advocate and who at the time also raised her voice against Lizzo, criticized on social networks what she considers an insult by the team surrounding Beyoncé by not warning her what it meant to use a word that hurts the disabled .

“It felt like a slap in the face to me, the disabled community and the progress we tried to make with Lizzo”, he emphasized.

The truth is that, among members of the African-American community, the word “spaz” is more related to “losing control”, “shaking up” or “going crazy”. So maybe the message of Beyoncé’s song shouldn’t have caused such a stir.

Anyway, Nile Rodgers, Skrillex, Nigerian Tems, Grace Jones, Pharrell and rap mogul Jay-Z , husband of Beyoncé, are other collaborators of the album leaked on the Internet days before its official release.
