The White House assured this Tuesday that “there are no violations or problems of sovereignty” with the visit of the president of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, to Taiwan.

The Communications Coordinator of the White House National Security Council, John Kirby, said in an interview with the CNN television network that his country does not support Taiwan independence and that Pelosi’s visit only “reaffirms the policy of a single China”, defended by Beijing.

Kirby wanted to play down the importance of the trip and reiterated that in the past other leaders of the US Congress had visited the island, “I would add that a former president of the Lower House did now about 25 or 25 years”.

Kirby assured that his country will not be intimidated by “threats” from China, which on Tuesday warned that Taiwan faces “disastrous consequences” if “the United States he badly manages the situation in the strait”.

The spokeswoman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry Hua Chunying pointed out that it is “difficult to imagine a more reckless and provocative action” than the visit of Pelosi, while extending the possibility of “disastrous consequences if the United States errs in its or judgement” not only for Taiwan, but for the “prosperity and security of the entire world”.

Kirby recalled that the US has seen this “bellicose rhetoric” from China in recent days, weeks and months, in addition to seeing a “more aggressive, more coercive” Chinese military activity near the Taiwan Strait.

He reiterated that his government is not going to be daunted and that it has “serious security commitments in the region: “We have five or six alliance treaties in the Indo-Pacific, we take these commitments seriously and we will continue to do so,” he remarked.

Kirby said that they will closely monitor the situation and considered that there is no reason for this visit to become a crisis or conflict, or to serve as a pretext for Beijing to take any military action, because the US has not changed its policy towards Taiwan.
