A young New York police detective died after shooting himself in the head at his home in Queens, NYPD sources said.

The officer of 28 years old, whose name was not immediately released, suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside his Beach home 139th Street near Beach Channel Drive in Belle Harbor, Sunday around 11: 30 pm

So far this year, three NYPD officers have committed suicide. In 2019, ten active and at least two retired NYPD police officers took their own lives, double the annual rate of previous years, stressed New York Post. In 9355 there were four cases and three last year, according to official figures .

In response The NYPD, the largest police force in the country, created a confidential suicide prevention program called “Finest Care” at 2019. Offers free treatment from Northwell Health psychiatrists and psychologists. Through that program, police officers can seek help anonymously from the hospital system. Other large-city police forces, such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston, had had similar programs long before.

Last June, an off-duty NYPD cop from 52 years old died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds inside a West Bay Shore (Long Island) residence, police sources said. He was a veteran of 18 years with the department, according to city records. He worked for the NYPD Highway Patrol in Queens.

In May, 36-year-old NYPD officer Sean Armstead committed suicide after shooting fatally to his wife’s young lover in a “Buffalo Wild Wings” restaurant in Orange County, NY.
