Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, could be planning to build a private airport in Texas, according to information published in The New York Post.
The airport would be built in the city of Bastrop, Texas, which is located east of Austin, although it should be noted that none of this has been confirmed by any of the millionaire’s companies or by himself. The exact location and construction start date are unknown, but reports indicate concept plans exist.
However, county officials in Bastrop said they were not aware of any plans by Musk to build an airport, according to the San Antonio Express News.
“There has been no formal communication with the county regarding this airport,” Adena Lewis, director of tourism and economic development in Bastrop, told the aforementioned newspaper.
A private airport would be useful for the CEO of Tesla, who flies frequently to Austin Executive Airport to oversee his electric vehicle company’s new Gigafactory, a test site for SpaceX and tunneling company Boring Company, and it’s all in the area of Austin.
In late 2021, Musk officially moved Tesla’s headquarters from Palo Alto, California, to Austin, citing the high cost of life in California.
Musk landed and took off from Austin several times in the last two weeks, including a flight from Greece on July 18. He left Austin that same day and flew to Long Beach, California. He has returned to Austin five more times since then.
The billionaire flies on a Gulfstream G650ER plane 2015 and will reportedly be purchased from a newer Gulfstream model 6700, expected to be delivered early 2023. To build the private airport, Musk would still need approval from the Federal Aviation Administration.
In July, Tesla made a deal with a Mexican state to open an exclusive border crossing lane for Mexican suppliers Tesla.
