The Italian Villiam Vecchi, exporter of European champion Milan (1973) and former goalkeeping coach of Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid, among other teams, passed away this Wednesday. He was 73 years old.

Vecchi, known as the Hero of Thessaloniki, he defended the colors of Milan for seven seasons, from 1967 to 1974. During that period he lifted a European Cup Winners’ Cup on Greek soil, that of 1973, against Leeds United. It bears his name engraved thanks to a performance that went down in Milan history.

Vecchi, the discoverer of Italian Gianluigi Buffon during his time at Parma, was part of Carlo Ancelotti’s technical team at Milan (2001-2009) and at Real Madrid (2013-2015), with which he won three Champions Leagues (2003 and 2007 with Milan and 2014 with Real Madrid).

Condolences to the family of our historic number 1 and European Champion goalkeeping coach 2003 and 2007”, Milan posted on its official Twitter account.

In addition to Milan’s, Vecchi wore the shirts of Cagliari, Como and Spal, all Italian teams. In total, the goalkeeper won one Scudetto, two Italian Cups, one European Cup, two Cup Winners’ Cups and one Intercontinental Cup as a player.

Real Madrid also deeply regretted the death of Vecchi. Expressing “his condolences for him, love and affection from him to his family, his teammates, his clubs and all his loved ones.”
