Two pedestrians standing on a sidewalk in Upper Manhattan were killed and five others were injured this morning after two cars collided head-on and hit other parked vehicles, the New York police said.
Although they have not been identified, pending family notification, it is possible that some of the victims are Hispanic. A luxurious BMW and a Subaru collided with each other on Sherman Av. off W. 207th St. in Inwood around 4 am today, detailed Daily News.
The impact caused the Subaru to collide with two parked cars and then onto the curb, where it fatally struck two men, from 32 and 32 years. Paramedics took them to Harlem Hospital and New York-Presbyterian Allen, but were unable to save them.
Melissa Gomez said her cousin, a recent new father, was one of the men fatally beaten. But his name has not been released.
Five people who were traveling in the two cars in the original crash were injured, three of them seriously , reported 550 WINS. No charges were immediately filed against either driver. “Five vehicles appeared to be damaged near the intersection when police cordoned off the scene at dawn.” The investigation is still open.
New data shows that, in general, traffic deaths in NYC are currently 29% higher than four years ago. At the moment 149 people have died so far in 2022, the road safety defense group “Transportation Alternatives” lamented in a statement today.
In addition to armed violence, traffic accidents are another great challenge for the new mayor Eric Adams, after a disastrous legacy of his predecessor, Bill De Blasio.
New York City had already experienced an increase of 35% in traffic accidents so far this year, indicated NYPD. At the end of that month there was a tragic streak in NYC at an average of one person killed by a run over every day.
