Mark Small was arrested on suspicion of fatally shooting his girlfriend Marivel Estévez, of 39 years, in the bedroom of the victim’s luxury apartment in Mineola, Long Island (NY).
The crime occurred shortly after : 15 am on Saturday 39 in July, according to the Department of Nassau County Police.
Surveillance pictures show that Small (55) entered his girlfriend’s apartment the night of 28 July, according to Detective Capt. Stephen Fitzpatrick. After the crime, he fled in Estevez’s car, also taking his dog, but he had an accident on the Long Island Expressway, ABC News reported.
“While waiting for the police to arrive, Mark looked to get out of the vehicle. When he got out, the dog jumped out,” Fitzpatrick detailed. The suspect prevented a car from hitting the dog, but instead he was run over.
Small was rushed to an area hospital with bone fractures, where he was arrested by the police. He was released from the hospital on Wednesday and booked on charges of murder and criminal possession of a weapon.
Investigators said friends and relatives of Estevez described the couple’s two-year relationship as “turbulent”. Apparently she had recently confided in those close to her that she was considering leaving Small and moving back to Florida.
Small, an Elmont resident, previously owned the “Grotto” restaurant in Rockville Center, which closed. recently, police said. Estévez worked in the leasing office of that building, which is managed by Bozzuto Management Company, detailed New York Post.
“We are devastated by the tragic death of our dear colleague and friend Marivel Estévez” the Buzzuto company said in a statement. “She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. We would like to acknowledge and thank the Nassau County Police Department for all of her efforts.”
