Jennette McCurdy has stated that she is finally at a point where she can miss her mother, despite the years of abuse she suffered while she was alive.
In a conversation with Anna Faris on the ‘Anna Faris is Unqualified’ podcast, the actress, aged 30, said she has finally found some peace, 10 years after her mother’s death after a battle with breast cancer. The former star of ‘iCarly’ had already described her complicated relationship with her in her new memoir, ‘I’m Glad My Mom Died’.
“I think closure is hard to come by, if it is possible to achieve it,” said McCurdy, who recounted in the book her mother’s alleged abusive behavior, which included promoting her anorexia and bathing her until her teens. “But I think that’s what the book helped me with. I think there was an attempt to find closure. Now I am able to have this experience with my mother where I can miss her“.
The television star considers that she has finally found some “relief”.
“Just accept that I miss her. I’m not mad, I’m not hurt, I just miss her. It was very complicated for a long time and now it feels easier”, he told Faris.
Reflecting on his childhood Jennette spoke of how “normalized” it became growing up in an abusive home. Despite the constant chaos that ensued, including physical abuse, McCurdy did not realize that his life was not exactly normal.
“For me, my brothers played Nintendo Goldeneye while my mother was chasing my father around the house with a knife. It became so normal and part of the daily routine“explained the former Nickelodeon actress. “When I was little, I didn’t realize it was abuse or trauma. She just thought: ‘The boys are playing 007, mom is chasing dad with a knife, grandma is crying with toilet paper in head’ “.
When Faris asked her where she was hiding during the chaos at home, the now short film producer said that there was nowhere to hide in the house since her mother was a hoarder and everything was full of things she collected.
