Diana’s car was finally sold to a buyer in Cheshire after a spirited bidding war between hopeful buyers in Dubai and Coventry drew applause from the crowd.

“In itself, it is an immaculate example of an RS Turbo”, auctioneer Johnathan Humbert said during the auction.

“But the fact that it has the enormous added providence of having been ordered and specified by the late Diana, Princess of Wales, it gives you a huge, a huge undetermined amount of added value. It is impossible to underestimate the importance of this car”, he added.

Humbert said that the car, which he described as a “piece of history”, received the most telephone offers of any lot in the last 12 years.

“They are £552, in the Ford Escort. I’ve never said that before,” Humbert joked during the auction.

In a press release prior to the auction, Silverstone Auctions said that Diana’s choice of personal cars in the early 1980 “reflected her modest status as a nursery school teacher.”

“The princess Diana preferred to be behind the wheel of her own car, albeit with a detective in the passenger seat, a member of the Royal Protection Command,” the press release says.

“Princess Diana was a city girl at heart and would go shopping or meet her friends for lunch, behind the wheel of her own car perhaps seen as a break from the police escorts flanking a Rolls-Royce armored, and the attention it attracted”, he pointed out.

Diana and her boyfriend Dodi Al Fayed died on 31 August 1997, while fleeing from the aggressive paparazzi who were trying to take a picture of them in a Mercedes S280 led by Henri Paul, Acting Head of Security at the Hotel Ritz in Paris.
