Camila Osorio of 20 years old and number 70 of the WTA ranking will play in the second round with the head of serial number 29, Alison Riske-Amritraj, next Wednesday 31 August.
The match, played in typical summer temperatures at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, got off to a favorable start for Li, aged 22 and number 31 of the world.
The American widely dominated the Colombian, but she would surprise with a spectacular comeback that earned her the applause of the public at the end.
At the start of the second set, the Colombian won 2-0 in based on his great mobility and cunning, but, above all, as his background establishes, on his ability to face adversity and never give up. In the end, Osorio added points based on her first serve to emerge victorious and hope to continue advancing in the last Grand Slam of the year.
Osorio’s victory also makes history, by becoming the first Colombian, at 14 years old, who wins a match in the main draw of the US Open, after losing the first set.
Osorio and Li played the final of the Tenerife Open last year, with victory for Li, which meant for the American to win the first title of her career.
