The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China condemned on Monday the passage of two US cruise ships through the Taiwan Strait on Sunday, accusing the North American country of “deliberately undermining regional peace and stability”.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian warned Monday that the US Navy’s action is not a “compromise with freedom of navigation” but a provocation in search of “uncontrolled freedom.”
In the daily press conference offered by the Foreign Ministry, he asked the US to “stop distorting the principle of ‘one China'” supported by the North American country, and demanded that “respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity” of other nations.
This operation occurs four weeks after the president of the US Legislature, Nancy Pelosi, made a fleeting visit to Taipei despite previous warnings from Beijing, unleashinga crisis in the strait and causing military maneuvers around the island.
The war games with live fire and the launch of long-range missiles were described by the Taiwanese government as “irresponsible” , in addition to raising numerous signs of concern within the international community.
The United States stated during them that it would continue to operate across the Taiwan Strait, describing the crisis as “manufactured” by Beijing.
China claims sovereignty over Taiwan, an island it considers a rebellious province since the Kuomintang nationalists withdrew there in 1949, after losing the civil war against the communists.
