The regularization committee appointed by FIFA, to solve the situation that Salvadoran soccer is experiencing due to an investigation against the Executive Committee of Fesfut for alleged money laundering, assumed the reins of the entity on Monday, according to it was reported at a press conference.
FIFA decided to form a regularization committee after the case of the Salvadoran Football Federation (Fesfut) was heard by the Bureau of the Council of the football governing body world.
The Executive Committee of Fesfut, led by Hugo Carrillo and who is also being investigated for alleged money laundering, concluded on 29 of July his period of four years at the head of the entity, so Fesfut was without authorities since last August 1.
Sofia Malizia, from FIFA’s Governance Department of Member Associations, explained this Monday at the Fesfut facilities that “after a very rigorous selection process, in which several interviews were carried out, FIFA, in consultation with Concacaf, decided appoint for a period of one year” the committee, made up of 4 members and led by Salvadoran lawyer Humberto Sáenz.
The appointment of said committee, Malizia pointed out, “responds to the need to safeguard the integrity and autonomy of soccer in El Salvador and Fesfut“.
“Unfortunately, different actions taken recently by third parties they have forced FIFA and Concacaf to establish a rigorous regularization process within Fesfut”, he pointed out.
The FIFA representative stressed that some One of the functions of the committee will be to carry out a “meticulous” analysis of Fesfut’s finances and call for elections to elect the new authorities of the Salvadoran sports entity.
For his part, Sáenz indicated that “We are starting, just a few hours ago, to learn about it, to find out (about the situation). We have already had some important meetings with key authors within the Federation, but obviously we need to finish understanding the problem”.
“We are fully aware of the challenge we have all accepted. It has been a very thoughtful decision by each and every one of us (…) we know how difficult this challenge is and we are aware that we have assumed it with total and absolute responsibility, we believe that we can contribute a lot to the normalization of football in the coming months ”, he indicated.
He added that work will be done so that activities in Salvadoran soccer return to normal “as soon as possible”.
The games of the professional leagues of the country are still suspended more than a month after the raid on the Fesfut Federation by the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), which is investigating an alleged fraudulent administration and money laundering.
