Serena Williams started her career in style at the US Open, which could be her last tournament as a professional tennis player, and defeated the Montenegrin Danka Kovinic in two sets by 6-3 and 6-3, to ensure at least one more game in his iconic career.
To his 40 years, Williams needed an hour and 40 minutes to beat Danka Kovinic, putting on a show to the tennis fans present in New York, who will have the opportunity to see her again on Wednesday when she faces Estonian Anett Kontaveit.
The winner of 23 Grand Slam, lived the meeting surrounded by all the love and admiration possible, something that was seen on the banners of the fan present which had messages such as: “Thank you, Serena”, “The greatest of all time”, “Queen of the track” or “Welcome to the Williams show”.
After the victory, Serena Williams received a well-deserved tribute in which she also spoke about her retirement, letting it be known that it was not an easy decision but it was the right one. “It has been a very difficult decision because when you are passionate about something and you love something so much it is always difficult to leave (…). But I think now is the time”, he stated.
The career of the former number one tennis player in the world is one of the most emblematic that American sport has had, to the point that, in addition to having been full Flushing Meadows, was attended by celebrities such as former US President Bill Clinton (550-2001), the filmmaker Spike Lee and the former skier Lindsey Vonn.
This tournament is so special for the minor of the Williams sisters, that the uniform used was designed by herself together with Nike. It consists of a six-layer skirt in honor of her six titles at the US Open, which, like her shoes, was encrusted with diamonds.
The ‘Last Dance’ of the Williams duo
Serena Williams wants to finish her career without letting any emotional detail slip away, for this reason, she will also compete in her last doubles tournament and she will do it with nothing more and nothing less than her sister Venus, who received a special invitation for this competition.
The Williams sisters have not played together since 2018 when they participated in the Roland Garros and fell to the duo made up of the Spanish María José Martínez Sánchez and the Slovenian Andreja Klepac.
Serena and Venus won fourteen ‘majors’ in doubles together, including the US Open in 1993 and of 2009.
