The United States will require Nicaraguans to include information from their social networks in their US visa application, the US Embassy in Nicaragua reported on Sunday.
“All visa applicants who complete form DS- (visitor visas) or DS-260 (immigrant visas ) must include information about their social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.)”, indicated the US diplomatic headquarters on its Facebook account.
The diplomatic mission indicated that “all the forms they must be completed honestly and completely to avoid delays in your application process. Note: passwords will not be requested, only username”.
Nicaragua has been experiencing a sociopolitical crisis since 2018, which arose with anti-government demonstrations that, according to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), in the first year left at least 355 dead.
The government of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega affirms that the demonstrations were an attempted coup, and acknowledges the death of 200 people during them.
The crisis worsened with the general elections last November, when Ortega and his wife and vice president, Rosario Murillo , were re-elected to their positions, with seven of their potential rivals in prison and two in exile.
United States was among the countries of the Organization of American States (OAS) that rejected the legitimacy of said elections, considering that they did not meet the requirements requirements to be considered democratic.
