Republican Governor Greg Abbott launched Operation Lone Star Operation in March of 2021, focused on the persecution of immigrants in Texas.
Abbott’s plan has several fronts, including sending asylum seekers to the cities of New York and Washington, DC, but its impact is not only against these non-citizens, but for the Texan communities where dozens of state police officers were deployed.
Fernando García, executive director and founder of the Border Network for Human Rights (BNHR), explains the scope of the Operation Lone Star and why Texan communities, especially with Latino populations, are worried, but are already organizing to document abuses.
“We have seen a deployment of military technology… If the question is whether the border is open, the answer is no, it is not open”, d Jon Garcia. “It is an extremely closed and very dangerous border“.
