At least four people have been killed during a Russian bombardment in Ukraine’s second largest city, Kharkiv.
The city’s regional governor said at least four were killed and four wounded in the Russian shelling of the city.
“As a result of the shelling of the central part of Kharkiv, at least 4 people were killed and 4 more were injured,” said Oleh Synehubov on the Telegram messaging application .
According to the first reports, missile strikes fell in a central part of the city, hitting a public park, a kindergarten and an area near a hospital.
The to Mayor of the city, Ihor Terekhov, said that after the shelling a fire broke out in a residential building, so the number of victims could increase. He did not confirm the nature of the buildings hit by the missiles.
Maria Avdeeva, director of research at the European Association of Ukraine Experts, said: “Brutal artillery attack during the day on the part Kharkiv center. 5 people dead, 9 injured”.
“The missiles hit the recreational park, where people sunbathed, the kindergarten and the area near the hospital”, added Avdeeva.
Russian shelling also hit residential areas in the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv, killing two people and destroying houses, according to city officials.
Witnesses reported that the attack hit a house directly next to a school, killing a woman.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged Russian troops to flee to save their lives when his forces launched an offensive near the occupied city of Kherson, saying the Ukrainian army was retaking their territory.
