“PJ Clarke’s”, one of the most emblematic restaurants in Midtown Manhattan, suffered a fire that almost ended 138 years of story, authorities said.
The FDNY responded to the location on East 55th Street and Third Avenue in Manhattan shortly after 9 p.m. on Sunday. According to a representative, firefighters reported “smoke from the [restaurant]” and “fire on [the] wall.”
A dozen units with 60 firefighters responded to the restaurant, which operates in 915 3rd Av. from the year 1884. The fire was put out at 9: 39 pm and no injuries were reported.
The FDNY said yesterday that the cause of the fire was still under investigation, but a restaurant representative responded to the New York Post in an email that it was a “small electrical fire”.
“We had very little damage and no injuries ”, added the representative. “Our electricians are repairing the system, making sure it’s safe. The bar should be open at 9pm tonight (Monday) and the dining room in a few days, hopefully.”
“We’ve been here 138 years and counting, we’re going to continue having fun and continue being the PJ’s you know and love”, added the representative. The restaurant has other locations in NYC, but none is as historic as this one.
