Daniel Galán number 94 of the ATP ranking leaves in The road to nothing more and nothing less than the number 5 in the world, Stefanos Tsitsipas, one of the stars of the circuit and who also played the possibility of ascending to the first of the ATP ranking, at the close of the US Open, the last Grand Slam of the year .
“I am very proud. We prepare all our lives to play on courts and rivals like these. I’m happy just to play here”, declared Galán at the Louis Armstrong stadium, where the match was played.
The Colombian will face Australian Jordan Thompson, number 102 of the ATP, who also surprised Italian Lorenzo Sonego (63) in five sets.
Galán entered the main draw of the US Open after defeating in his last match of the qualifying phase against Italian Matteo Arnaldi.
“He dominated the match. I just couldn’t get into his game,” Tsitsipas said.
The Greek was far from his best and struggled to find consistency, but Galán was superb on his US Open main draw debut and he played many of the first exchanges from inside the baseline while building his lead.
“I was very motivated before the US Open started because I knew that I could use this tournament to get closer to the number 1 spot. It would be very strange and very unusual if it didn’t cross my mind, because this is something I wanted since that I was a child and I know that now was my chance to take a step forward,” Tsitsipas lamented.
