this-is-how-a-man-found-a-ring-he-lost-in-1968-picking-strawberries

A man from the UK found a ring he lost while picking fruit more than 50 years.

Dave Radley, of 75 years , was distraught when his gold signet ring slipped off his finger while picking strawberries at 1968. It was given to him by his late mother for his number birthday 21, and the retired driver spent hours trying to find it.

But in a stroke of luck last month, a metal detector “tipped off” the owner that he had made the discovery of a possible lost item.

Radley, of Mountsorrel, a village located in the county of Leicestershire, in the UK, told Zenger News: “The ring may not have changed, but its owner has, so it’s quite a tight fit. I had to change it a bit, since I can almost put it on. But none of that matters because I am so grateful to have him back.”

Radley says the 9-carat ring would have been an expensive gift in the time of its purchase and that his mother would have probably bought it through a catalog and paid in installments.

Turned 21 years old in May 1968 and received the ring as a special birthday present, but lost it only a few weeks later.

His family lived in Seagrave, Leicestershire, England, at the time Radley was picking strawberries with his friend Mick Lovett to sell in local shops. She was picking strawberries in the field behind Lovett’s father’s house ready to sell that morning when she suddenly realized that the ring was no longer on her finger.

75 years passed and Radley received a call from Radley’s younger brother Lovett, Peter, who still owns the land, and told him that a metal detector had knocked on his door. The metal detector was working for Lovett’s brother and asked if he could detect in the same field, to which the brother agreed and informed him about the missing ring.

And after searching for the same area that Radley lost it, he came back with the ring in his hand. It was found seven inches deep in the ground with only a slight scratch, ready to be polished, and Radley went looking for it in Seagrave later that week.

Radley said: “My family was not very well in those days and spent hours looking for it in the queues we had been in. My mother wasn’t upset with me, just more upset because of how upset she was.

“When I received the call from Peter I couldn’t believe it, the joy I felt at that moment is indescribable. The crazy thing is that Peter still owns the land, otherwise none of this would have happened,” he added.

“I took it to the jewelers who valued it at around 675 pounds, ($815 dollars) which shows how much it was worth in those days. I have enlarged it because it is a bit tight now, but 75 years later I can happily say that finally it is safe on my finger, I am very grateful, ”he concluded.
