The South American duo made up of Gonzalo Escobar from Ecuador and Ariel Behar from Uruguay reaches the second round of the US Open for the first time.

The power of the left-handed Escobar and the versatility of Behar marked the pace of the game from the start of the game played this Wednesday on the court of the “Billie Jean King” National Tennis Center, venue of the New York Open.

The Spaniards Albert Ramos/Bernabé Zapata managed to keep the duel tied until the middle from the first quarter and onwards they could do nothing to decipher the dominance of the South Americans.

The first one started quite moved and even, but a break in the seventh game he imposed the difference in the first quarter and in the second it was a walk in which the Spaniards were overwhelmed at all times by the solvency of Escobar/Behar.

“Obviously we have to have a short memory in tennis, but the feeling I left with last year was very bitter and frustrating and I can say that today we have removed that thorn with this victory at the US Open. I feel incredible”, declared Escobar, originally from the port city of Manta, Ecuador.

The Ecuadorian credit refers to the defeat in the US Open version 2021 when they fell in the first round against the couple formed by the Pakistani Aisam Qureshi and the British Jonny O’Mara, 6-3, 3-6 and 6-3.

“It has cost us a lot, so before talking about other things and aspirations first I would like to enjoy this that I have been waiting for a year. For the rest, draw conclusions about what was done well, what can be done better and try to build on what we did today”, Escobar added.

Gonzalo Escobar is 47 of the world in the men’s doubles ranking, while his partner Ariel Behar 44.

During the current season the South American duo reached the third round at the Australian Open, second round at the French Open and third round at Wimbledon and now they are in the second round of the US Open.
