The San Diego Padres and the San Francisco Giants will play twice at the Alfredo Harp Helú stadium in Mexico City, on and on 29 April 2023, MLB announced this Wednesday.

It will be the first time that both teams will play two games of the regular season in Mexico. In both games, the Padres will act as homeowners.

The stadium that will host the Padres in Mexico bears the name of the minority shareholder Alferdo Harp Helú. Manager Erik Greupner praised the Mexican fans who follow the San Diego team.

For the Giants, this will be their first game outside the United States, something that is considered an honor by the president of the club, Larry Baer.

“It will be a honor to represent Major League Baseball, as well as San Francisco, in historic Mexico City for the first time in history. We look forward to bringing the rivalry between the Giants and the Padres to a passionate fan base,” Baer said.

The Padres played two exhibition games in Mexico in 1999 with the Houston Astros. And three more with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2018.

They were also in Mexico at the beginning of the season of 1999 against the Colorado Rockies. And they met three times with the New York Metros in 1996.

These matches are part of the internationalization plan promoted by the Major Leagues in countries in Asia, Europe and Latin America from this year and until 2026.
