The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, received this Wednesday the directors of the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants, Major League Baseball teams that will play in 2023 in the country.
At the National Palace, the president, who played baseball as a young man and still does so recreationally, spoke with visitors and celebrated that will face each other at the Alfredo Harp Helú stadium, in Mexico City, on and 30 next April.
“They will play in April next year at the Red Devils stadium in Mexico City“, highlighted the president in his social networks.
Since coming to power in the 2018, López Obrador has given great support to baseball over others sports, he has been to ceremonies and every year he shows that he is passionate about the game by forecasting the Major League season.
At the meeting with the President of Mexico were the director of Major League Baseball ( MLB) Latin America, Rodrigo Fernández; MLB International Senior Vice President Jim Small; the head of Operations and Strategy of MLB, Chris Marinak; the president and CEO of the San Francisco Giants, Larry Baer and the CEO of the San Diego Padres, Erik Greupner, among other personalities.
The Major Leagues announced that the Padres and the Giants will celebrate their two games as part of the upcoming season, with the San Diego team as the home team.
It will be the first time that these novenas will play two official matches in Mexico, which has been enthusiastically received by the fans of that sport.
Erik Greupner praised the Mexican fans who follow the San Diego team, while the Giants boss, Larry Baer, considered it an honor that his first game of the season outside the United States is on Mexican soil.
“It will be an honor to represent Major League Baseball, as well as San Francisco, in historic Mexico City for the first time in the history. We look forward to bringing the rivalry between the Giants and the Padres to a passionate fan base,” Baer said shortly before the meeting with López Obrador.
The San Diego Padres played a couple of exhibition games in Mexico at 2016 with the Houston Astros. And three more with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2018.
In addition, they played with the Colorado Rockies in 1999 and before they met three times with the New York Mets, in 1996.
