The Argentine tennis player Diego Schwartzman provided a true spectacle by battling for three hours and 45 minutes to advance to the third round of the US Open after beating Australian Alexei Popyrin at Flushing Meadows in New York City.
The Argentine who is currently number 16 of the world ranking, won in three sets by 7-6(3), 7-5 and 7-6(6) the Australian number 84 of the world in which it was the first confrontation between the two on the ATP circuit.
The last time Schwartzman won at the ATP level, it was in a Canberra challenger 2016 in 2016 when he won in two sets by 6-3 and 6-2.
On the track 11 of Flushing Meadows in New York, the South American tennis player managed to cancel four set points in the first set before forcing the tiebreaker and winning it with authority by 7-3.
In the second set, the Argentine managed to overcome a break suffered in the first game and got another one in the twelfth game to give a blow to the match and frustrate his rival.
It was a physically and mentally demanding match, but Schwartzman managed to bring to his side the most delicate moments. He annulled a new match point in the tiebreaker and won it 8-6 to secure his round pass.
A third-round duel awaits him against the winner of the match between the American Francis Tiafoe and Australian Jason Kubler.
