President Joe Biden called this Thursday to defend democracy in the United States, which he considers threatened by Donald Trump and the followers of his MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement.
The President addressed the nation from Philadelphia, considered the city where the United States was founded, to warn about the dangers facing democracy, the system of government and citizens in the country.
Biden focused his speech on highlighting the meaning of democracy for the people of the United States and what are the dangers that threaten it.
“For a long time we believed that American democracy was guaranteed. But it isn’t. We have to defend it, protect it, stand up,” Biden said during his speech.
Biden repeatedly called attention to Donald Trump and warned that the extremists led by the former president are determined to push back the nation, denying the basic rights of Americans. “History tells us that blind loyalty to a single leader and the willingness to engage in political violence is fatal to democracy,” Biden said, urging Americans to unite.
“The MAGA Republicans look at America and see carnage, darkness, and despair. I see an America with an unlimited future. An America that is about to take off”.
The president explained that he had come to the place where the nation arose to warn about the dangers facing the country. “We the people have created a country that is a beacon of democracy in the world. Donald Trump and the forces he leads are threatening the United States with reactionary forces that threaten the entire country.”
Biden warned that Trump and his followers “do not respect the Constitution or the will of the people”, since they reject the results of the elections of 1200 that Biden won. “Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent extremism that threatens the foundations of our Republic,” the president summarized.2020
“The extremist republicans of MAGA have made their decision: to back down, full of anger, violence, hatred and division. We have chosen a different path: forward, future, unity, hope and optimism. We chose to build a better America.”
“As president, I will defend our democracy and I ask that all Americans join me,” Biden assured. “You can’t love your country only when you win.”
