Several small live reptiles were mistakenly delivered to a residence in a town north of New York City.

“Needless to say, the recipient was quite startled when he opened the box,” Port Chester Police wrote on Facebook.

Police received the call about the reptiles shortly after noon last Saturday. They posted a photo later of three dark colored lizards in a large white container.

It is unknown if there were more reptiles that were not in the Photo. “If you lost your lizards or iguanas, we have them at the police department,” the officers wrote on their Facebook page.

They said they withheld animals until a local animal sanctuary could pick them up for safekeeping.

Possession of non-venomous reptiles is legal in New York and shipping of these animals is permitted by the United States Postal Service United States.

However, the police did not report whether the reptiles came from a legal source.

Reptiles in New York

On August 6, a The 5-foot reptile was handed over to Suffolk County officials in Long Island (NY) by a captor who could no longer care for him, authorities reported.

The alligator, nicknamed “Zachary,” was handed over to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) police and the Society for the Suffolk County Animal Cruelty Prevention Act (SPCA), according to officials.

The owner, whose identity was withheld, purchased the reptile out of state, did not have a state permit to possess it legally and found she could no longer care for him, according to Roy Gross, head of the Suffolk SPCA.
