Four Democratic congressmen from the state of Illinois on Thursday accused the governor of Texas, Republican Greg Abbott, of “dehumanizing” the migrants he has sent by bus to the city of Chicago.
The actions of Abbott, which before Chicago has sent thousands of migrants to New York and Washington on buses, “are not a solution to the immigration crisis,” the legislators wrote in a statement.
“It is a political move that dehumanizes and demonizes them”, assured the legislators of the House of Representatives Jesús García, Mike Quigley, Jan Schakowsky and Marie Newman.
Likewise, the congressmen welcomed the 75 migrants to the city who arrived on the first bus from Texas on Wednesday night.
In a statement, Abbott said that sending migrants to Chicago, New York and Washington – all three governed by Democrats – is part of his “response” to the immigration policy history of the president of the United States, Joe Biden, which “overwhelms the border communities of Texas”.
Last April, Governor Abbott ordered the Texas Division of Emergency Management to rent buses to transport migrants from Texas to Washington. Earlier this month, the Republican added New York City as a second delivery location.
The office Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfood said the city is doing “everything possible to ensure these migrants and their families can receive shelter, food” and protection.
