green-card-plan-for-undocumented-immigrants-could-have-support-from-leader-schumer-in-the-senate

The reform to the Registration Law or HR 8433 could have the support in the Senate of the majority leader, the Democrat Chuck Schumer (New York), reported a source from that House.

“The leader [Schumer] would support a law like this. It is similar to the proposal that he supported and introduced in the Build Back Better package, ”said the source who declined to offer his name because he was not authorized to speak publicly on the subject.

Said reform already adds 60 Democratic representatives in the House of Representatives, due to the work of the Coalition for the Human Rights of Immigrants (CHIRLA).

The proposal started with six Democrats on board, but through the campaign “Open the door to permanent residence with the Registry” it has been possible to increase that figure.

The source in the Senate recalled that Senator Schumer supported a similar plan in 2021, when the Rebuild agenda was being discussed Better (Build Back Better or BBB).

Refers to the plan sent to the Parliamentarian in the Senate, Elizabeth MacDonough, who rejected said proposal under the Reconciliation process.

The source indicated that it remains to be seen if the House of Representatives approves the bill presented by Democrat Zoe Lofgren (California).

“The problem would be to know if it is something that can be approved in the House of Representatives”, considered the source.

He added that there was a conflict between Democratic representatives during the discussion of the BBB agenda, where they could not include the Registration Law.

“In the Reconciliation package ( BBB) that they approved could not have the support of their more moderate colleagues and they had to remove the Registry proposal and only included plan C”, he stated.

Said plan C was about the project to a waiver of deportation and Employment Authorization, without the right to obtain Permanent Legal Residence.

The source recalled that a 60 vote is needed to approve the reform in the Senate.

CHIRLA reported that work will continue between representatives and affirmed that there were “strong possibilities” in the Senate regarding a similar plan.

“Several senators have expressed their interest in advancing the proposal and obtaining support for its approval”, indicated the spokesman for CHIRLA, Jorge Mario Cabrera.

City Limits Representative Espaillat explains details and possible future of the Immigrant Registration Act

The office of Democratic Senator Alex Padilla (California), chairman of the Immigration Subcommittee, did not confirm whether he would sponsor a bill similar to HR 8433.

Nor has Democratic Senator Bob Menéndez (New Jersey), chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations and responsible for negotiating immigration reform for President Joe Biden, expressed his position on the bill register.
