, according to official data. Acevedo’s death is the 11th in DOC custody this year ; and 16 detainees died in 2021.

Acevedo’s deadly escape came less than two months before a key hearing in a federal court that can decide whether prisons remain under control of the city or turned over to a federal trustee.

The mayor of New York is trying to install its “action plan” to fix the prisons before the hearing. But DeRay McKesson, director of Campaign Zero, an organization that advocates for the federal administration, noted that eight people have died in prison since the action plan was approved on June by Judge Laura Taylor Swain pending a sample of positive results.

“Judge Swain promised to hold DOC accountable if her action plan failed. By any conceivable standard, she has,” McKesson claimed. “The rate of deaths has actually increased since the last hearing. There is no reason to wait until November to make this decision. This apartment cannot fix itself,” she insisted.

In parallel, more than 3,148 prison officers have resigned or retired from 2019 in NYC and 559 left work this year, which is an alarming decrease of 31% in the force in charge security in NYC prisons.

Jail guards are on the run as Rikers Island, NYC’s largest prison, has become more violent, accentuating a vicious cycle. There were 1,148 incidents in which uniformed personnel were assaulted this year through early September, the union said.

And this week, two female correctional officers on Rikers Island (NYC) admitted they passed cellphones and drugs to imprisoned “Bloods” gang members in exchange for tens of thousands of dollars in bribes.
