Caleb McLaughlin, who plays Lucas Sinclair in ‘Stranger Things’, spoke openly about how he faces racism as part of the hit Netflix science fiction series.
At Heroes Comic Con In Belgium, McLaughlin said fans of the show have treated him differently from his non-black co-stars over the years, international media reported. “He definitely affected me as a kid. At my first Comic-Con, some people didn’t stand in my line because I was black. Some people told me: ‘Oh, I didn’t want to be in your line because you were mean to Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown)’”.
“Even now, some people don’t follow me or don’t support me because I am black. Sometimes abroad I feel racism, I feel intolerance. Sometimes it’s hard to talk about it and for people to understand, but when I was younger it definitely affected me a lot,” said the 20-year-old actor, that I had 14 when the first season of the series premiered.
Although McLaughlin has 15.4 million of followers on Instagram, he is the least followed on that platform of the six youngest main members of Stranger Things.
At the beginning of the series, when he was a teenager 14, McLaughlin said his younger self wondered, “Why am I the underdog? Why do I have the fewest followers? I’m on the same show as everyone in season one.”
“My parents had to say, ‘It’s a sad truth, but it’s because you’re the black kid on the show… Because I was born with this beautiful chocolate skin, I am not loved. But that’s why with my platform I want to spread positivity and love because I don’t return hate to people who hate me,” he added.
