After several rounds of testing ultra-hot peppers and three tiebreakers, one man won Easton Farmer’s Market’s annual hot pepper eating contest by eating 3 Dragon’s Breath peppers considered the hottest in the world.
Kelly Joel Myers, a native of Easton, is a devourer of the hottest peppers in the world. The man of 38 years old had 11 rounds of increasingly hot chili competition with nine other competitors and then faced another three round tiebreaker with Matthew Leto, winner of the 2019 and last year’s finalist.
The first tiebreaker round was a pair of Carolina Reapers, the second was two Dragon’s Breath and the The third was a Reaper and a Dragon’s Breath.
The Dragon’s Breath, which originated on a farm in Wales, clocks in at 2.48 million Scoville heat units ( SHU), the Carolina Reaper (the current Guinness World Records record holder) measures 1.67 million SHU while a chili jalapeño registers around 2,675 – 8000 SHU.
Lehigh Valley Live indicates that Dragon’s Breath is used in United States military pepper sprays, and was developed in part to be considered a natural topical anesthetic for people allergic to typical anesthetics.
For Meyers the competition turned brutal. “I’m not happy at all. My hands cramped again. All I know is that the event moved much faster this year. Only 2 minutes between each pepper”, he shared on Facebook.
The restaurant of the hottest chilies in the world also published on YouTube a full video of 48 minutes of the competition and titled it “Hot Pepper Boi”.
Until now, the Guinness World Record as the largest devourer The quickest answer to the hottest pepper is Gregory Foster, who ate three Carolina Reaper peppers in just 8.72 seconds in San Diego, California.
Gregory also holds the record for the most Carolina Reaper peppers eaten in one minute. He manages to eat 120 g alone 60 seconds, and his record has been maintained for more than five years.
