At least six people were injured in a shooting Wednesday at a Northern California high school, Oakland Police Capt. Casey Johnson said during a news conference.
Two people were taken to a hospital, Lieutenant Ray Kelly, a spokesman for the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, told ABC7 News.
The shooting occurred on a street where there are several schools and it houses many school-age children, the television channel reported. Police have not said how many students were present or if any were injured during the shooting. A family reunification area had been set up.
Kelly said the incident is “no longer active”.
The Oakland Police Department tweeted that officers were investigating a shooting on Fontaine Street, where schools are located.
Television cameras showed numerous police vehicles and emergency equipment in the vicinity of the student campus.
The day before the Wednesday shooting, Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong announced plans to address the city’s ongoing gun violence by increasing officer presence in areas where gun violence is concentrated and where police believe people are frequently involved in shootings, according to The Guardian noted.
This most recent shooting comes after more than two years of heightened gun violence that began early in the pandemic. So far this year, 96 people have been killed, most with firearms. At this time last year 102 people were killed, the outlet assured.
Let us remember that this new shooting takes place when the population of the United States is still shocked by the shooting of the past 24 in May in the city of Uvalde in Texas, which resulted in the death of 19 children and 2 teachers from a primary school.
It was the deadliest school shooting in the United States since the massacre of 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.
The tragedy reopened the debate on the use of weapons in the country, as it occurred ten days after another dozen people were shot to death in a supermarket in the state of New York.
