irs-sent-“child-tax-credit”-checks-to-ineligible-families-and-now-asks-them-to-pay-the-money-back

Millions of families in the United States received checks from the Internal Revenue Service (RS) that did not correspond to them under the extension of the “Child Tax Credit” (CTC), a measure promoted by the Biden Administration through the “Plan of American bailout” due to the COVID pandemic-19.

An internal IRS report to which he had access The Wall Street Journal revealed that the agency was wrong in sending more than $1,100 million dollars in aid for children in the home .

Simultaneously, the IRS left families who were creditors of the funds approved in the United States Congress without money.

More than $3,700 million dollars were not disbursed to eligible families due to improper processing of assistance.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) audit found that some 4.1 million households were left without help from the federal government. The foregoing represents 2% of the more than 175 million checks that the agency sent.

Families that received the check despite the fact that their children were over the age limit as well as payments that were granted twice for the same minor were some of the errors detected.

The failure responds, according to the IRS, to a problem in their computer systems that they corrected in 2021.

The IRS has asked families who received the money by mistake to return it at the time of filing their tax returns.

Likewise, those who were eligible for the benefit and did not obtain it, may request that the money be provided through a tax return.

In many instances, these are taxpayers who do not have a Social Security number, as is the case of undocumented migrants.

This group also includes families of low-income who are not required to file taxes.

The American rescue plan approved last March in the federal Congress provided for payments of $300 monthly for each child under 6 years old and up to $250 per month for each child from 6 to 17 years.

The total amount the person would receive would also depend on the income reported by the children’s parents or guardian to the IRS.

Many families received, between July and December of 2021, the 19% of the total money under the CTC or half of the money that corresponded to them under the distribution plan of the Biden Administration.
