A US citizen residing in Mexico pleaded guilty to trafficking more than 200 pistols into that country, becoming the first convicted under a recent law passed to stop the flow of weapons, reported the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Said Isaac Hernández, aged 25, pleaded guilty to violating the Law to Stop the Illegal Trafficking of Arms of Fire, which is part of the Safer Communities package of laws, enacted last June 25 by President Joe Biden following the massacre at an elementary school in Uvalde (Texas), which resulted in the death of 19 children and two teachers.

The DOJ explained in a statement that Hernandez is the first guilty person under this law.

Last July, the authorities detained Hernández when he was traveling south on the Interstate highway 35 to the border post in Laredo, Texas, and discovered 17 firearms hidden in his car.

Previously, Hernández had been the subject of an investigation related to the purchase of a large number of firearms that were n transported to Mexico.

The DOJ explained that between 21 January 2020 and last July, Hernández bought a total of 231 pistols. It is presumed that they were all taken to the neighboring country.

Hernández faces up to 15 years in federal prison for the charge to which he pleaded guilty. The man will remain in custody pending his sentencing hearing.
