Within the framework of the illegal annexations of four Ukrainian regions by Russia, Canada retaliated against this country and imposed economic sanctions against several Kremlin personalities and an entity, which have collaborated in the referendums.
During a press conference in Washington, accompanied by the Secretary General of the United States, the Canadian Foreign Minister, Mélanie Joly, said this Friday that “these referendums have no legitimacy and will never be recognized.”
“Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia will continue to be part of Ukraine”, emphasized the minister.
The sanctions announced this Friday affect 43 Russian oligarchs and their families, the body of the Kherson Government as well as 35 senior officials from the Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia regions.
Canada considers that these individuals and the governing body of Kherson “are complicit in the President Putin’s desperate attempt to undermine the principles of state sovereignty and share responsibility for senseless bloodshed throughout Ukraine”.
