There is less and less to go before the most anticipated sporting event of the year begins: the World Cup in Qatar 2022. This is the fifth, and possibly last, World Cup date for Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, the two best footballers of this era, who seek to bathe in glory.
To their 35 years old, Messi is looking for a new opportunity to consecrate himself, after staying in the round of 16 in Russia 2018. Also, in the World Cup in Brazil 2014 he lost that final against Germany, in which Mario Götze scored the winning goal in extra time.
Cristiano Ronaldo, for his part, hopes to burn the last cartridges of his career with a flourish. And it is that the furthest he has come in a World Cup is in the semifinals of the German edition 2006. For this date, at least, he has a star-studded squad.
A final between Messi and CR7
Now then, is there a possibility that these two stars of the ball will face each other in the final from Qatar 2022? Yes. Everything depends on Argentina and Portugal qualifying first in the group stage and from then on winning all the matches until reaching the decisive match.
La Albiceleste, which shares Group C with Mexico, Poland and Saudi Arabia, would collide in the round of 16 against the second classified of Group D (tentatively Denmark). In the quarterfinals it could be against Senegal, the Netherlands (Group A); United States or Wales (Group B). If the logic holds, it would face Brazil or Spain in a hypothetical semifinal.
Portugal’s path looks a little more complicated, since it shares Group H with Uruguay, Ghana and South Korea. In the round of 16 it would be seen with the second of Group G (it could be Serbia or Switzerland). In the quarterfinals they could face Belgium, Croatia (Group F); Germany or Spain (Group F). The hypothetical semifinal would be against France, England or the Netherlands.
