Colombian boxer Luis Quiñones died in the early hours of this Friday, after spending five days in a coma as a result of injuries sustained last Saturday, during a fight in the city of Barranquilla against his compatriot José Muñoz.

Quiñones was in an induced coma after undergoing surgery for a clot in the brain after collapsing during the fight, held at the Elías Chewgin Coliseum in this Caribbean city, in which he was fighting for the national junior welterweight title.

Leonardo Quiñones, brother of the boxer, confirmed the death in a message on social networks. “You beat us to it, my soul brother. You are now in the lap of your heavenly father, whom you worshiped and served. I love you brother. Forever and forever in our hearts”, published Luis’ relative on Facebook.

Even the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, lamented the athlete’s death on Twitter: “It hurts a lot to see a young man full of dreams leave and with a whole future ahead of him. To the family of the Santanderean boxer Luis Quiñones: a warm hug, I am very sorry for this difficult moment”.

The Colombian Boxing Federation (Fecolbox) expressed, for its part, its condolences to the family of Quiñones, who, unfortunately, “passed away at midnight on Thursday, after being declared brain dead”.

“’Pantallita’ lost his toughest fight, we pray to God for his soul . The sport is in mourning”, expressed the Federation in its social networks.

A fight lasting several days

The most recent report from the General Clinic of the North, the care center where Quiñones was confined, indicated that the boxer “suffered neurological, functional and metabolic deterioration, which accompanied several ischemias in the left cerebral hemisphere.”

Originally from Barrancabermeja, a town located in the center of the country, on the banks of the Magdalena River, the boxer came to the bout of the s Saturday as the favorite, since he was undefeated in his career, since he won the 10 fights he fought as a professional, six of them for the via the knockout.

After the fight and after Quiñones entered the assistance center, his rival José Muñoz had published a letter in which he expressed his concern about his friend’s critical condition.

In the letter, Muñoz said: “I never thought that a dream could turn into a real nightmare. The desire to succeed in life put us both on the same path, but because of those things in life and, above all, the profession we chose, today you are in a situation that we never imagined”.
