The death toll from Hurricane Ian in Florida has risen to 50, according to authorities and various local media ; however, the number could be higher due to the number of missing persons.

Florida Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie said that 12 deaths in Charlotte County, although eight from Collier County remain unconfirmed from the hurricane. At least one death from the hurricane is also believed to have been recorded in Polk County, the Tallahassee Democrat reported.

In Lee County, officials have not provided updates, which has been a one of the most affected areas due to the category 4 storm that made landfall on Wednesday in Cayo Costa, southwest Florida.

Local Lee County officials said there were at least seven deaths from of the storm Meanwhile, two deaths were recorded in Sarasota.

For his part, Guthrie pointed out that officials are still working to determine the exact number of victims of the inclement weather after the storm passed.

Director Guthrie noted that a Coast Guard swimmer had to dive underwater to enter a submerged house, and identified possible human remains.

“He was able to identify what which appeared to be human remains. But we don’t know exactly how many,” Guthrie added. “We just don’t know that number.

Guthrie also specified that 3,000 Rescue personnel went door to door in some of the worst affected areas.
