The Iranian people are experiencing convulsive days, full of blood and terror, after the murder of the young Mahsa Amini at the hands of the “Gasht-e-Ershad” or “morality police”, an armed body of the state which monitors that its citizens, and especially women, comply with the dress codes established by Islam, according to the interpretations of the sharia.
Unfortunately, the actions of said “police” are mostly against women, who have repeatedly been violently abused for not dressing “appropriately” in public, according to the interpretations of the officer on duty.
In Iran it is compulsory for girls to cover their heads from puberty, as well as they should wear loose clothing in public. Spokesmen for the Iranian government have said that the use of the hijab is optional, but evidently it is just the opposite in everyday life since, if true, social surveillance of women’s clothing would make no sense.
Amini, 22 years old, had been arrested last 13 September for wearing her hijab “improperly”, and was taken to a police station, from which he left in a coma.
After the unfortunate and cruel murder of Mahsa, Iranian citizens have lost their fear of tyrannical repression, which unfortunately has brought deadly consequences for many of the protesters: so far there have been some 41 people killed, most of them women, in addition to twenty journalists detained for carrying out their work, according to figures handled by the Committee for the Protection of Journalists (CPJ).
The world cannot remain blind and deaf to the clamor of Iranian women, and the thirst for d democracy of its people, after 43 years of the formation of the Islamic republic, since female leadership and empowerment are fundamental for every nation. It is important to highlight that the positive effects of gender equality and the development of social inclusion include the reduction of poverty rates, the promotion of regional economies and sustainable development.
From the West only We have to be attentive to the events, and raise our voice in favor of the civil rights of women in Iran, as well as, provide protection to those who unfortunately are victims of gender violence on this side of the globe.
