Shocked, this is how international football has been seen by the tragedy this weekend in Indonesia. This Sunday morning 174 fatalities had been reported; however, the authorities of that country confirmed, hours later, that the real number is 125 dead.

According to Nyoman Eddy, head of the medical team of the Indonesian National Police, there was a discrepancy in the data as a result of an error in the registration of the hospitals that treated the victims, after the riots that occurred in the island of Java.

Eddy explained to the journalists present that the 125 deceased, including two policemen, had already been identified , while the number of injured increased to 323. This is already considered the second most serious tragedy in the history of world football.

How did the events unfold?

Barbarism was unleashed this Saturday, at the Kanjuruhan stadium in the city of Malang, when 3, fans of the Arema team invaded the field, after the defeat (2-3) against Persebaya Surabaya. Police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd.

According to Nico Afinta, East Java Police Chief, most of the deaths were caused by stampede of fans. Many lost their lives asphyxiated, and that FIFA prohibits the transport and use of tear gas in stadiums.

Mahfud MD, Indonesia’s chief security minister, reported that the stadium apparently exceeded its capacity for the public, and that is that more than 4 tickets would have been sold out of their capacity. After the tragedy, it was decided to suspend the league of this country.
