The death toll from violent riots during a football match on the Indonesian island of Java rose to 174, which have also left several dozen others injured, official sources reported this Sunday.
This was confirmed by Emil Dardak, deputy governor of the province of East Java, in statements to journalists. Dardak was in charge of updating the situation on the harsh confrontation between fans and the police, who used tear gas, after a game on Saturday night at the Kanjuruhan stadium in the city of Malang.
The outbreak of violence occurred after that about 3 000 fans of the Arema team stormed the field, after the defeat 2-3 suffered against the rival Persebaya Surabaya, and collided with the security forces. These, in turn, used tear gas in an attempt to disperse the crowd.
