Tesla boss Elon Musk finally unveiled a long-awaited prototype of his “Optimus” humanoid robot.

The tech billionaire showcased “Optimus,” named after of the protagonist of the Hollywood franchise “Transformers”, at the electric vehicle manufacturer’s “AI Day” event on Friday.

The robot took the stage and waved to a cheering crowd. A video of the robot carrying a box, watering plants and moving metal bars in the automaker’s factory was also shown.

“Our goal is to make a useful humanoid robot as quickly as possible”, Musk said at the event at a Tesla office in Palo Alto, California.

“There is still a lot of work to do to refine Optimus and test it.”

Musk said that currently humanoid robots are “lacking a brain”, saying they don’t have the intelligence to navigate the world on their own, and are also very expensive and produced in low volume .

He later told the audience that the robot is capable of much more, but “we just didn’t want it to fall on its face”.

People will probably be able to buy an Optimus “in three to five years Musk said.

Tesla said that the Optimus robots would have four fingers and a thumb with a sinew-like system so they could have the dexterity of humans.

The robot is backed by giant artificial intelligence computers that track millions of frames of “Full Self-Driving” car video.

Similar computers would be used to teach robots tasks, they said.
